A Culinary Legacy: From Italian Sunday Sauce to Greek Tacos

Food, for me, is deeply intertwined with memories and family traditions. Some of my most cherished childhood recollections revolve around my dad, specifically his legendary Sunday sauce and meatballs. His recipe was unique, a testament to his passion for cooking, and a tradition he lovingly passed down to me. Years before he passed, I realized the importance of preserving this culinary heritage. I asked him to teach me his method, knowing that my attempts to recreate it from memory always fell short. As any true Italian cook would, he never measured a thing, simply tossing ingredients in with intuitive precision. I remember trying frantically to jot down amounts as he cooked, but his casual approach was part of the magic. One detail, however, always stood out: his unwavering loyalty to Tuttorosso tomatoes, which he affectionately referred to as “the stuff with the green label.”

This deep-rooted connection to quality ingredients and family cooking is why I was so genuinely thrilled to partner with Tuttorosso. It’s a brand I’ve trusted for years, one that holds a special place in my heart because I know my dad adored it. Tuttorosso tomatoes, a proud product of Red Gold Tomatoes, an Indiana-based company, have always been a staple in my kitchen, especially for those classic Italian dishes. This time, however, I wanted to explore new horizons, to challenge myself to incorporate these exceptional tomatoes into something entirely different, yet equally healthy and delicious. And so, the idea for Greek Chicken Soft Tacos was born.

Eating Lighter and Healthier: A Vacation-Ready Recipe

My husband and I are eagerly anticipating a vacation, and as many do before a trip, we’ve been making a conscious effort to eat lighter and incorporate more lean protein into our diet. This means focusing on white meats, fresh vegetables, and whole grains, while thoughtfully reducing fats from cheese, cream, and butter. These Greek Chicken Soft Tacos fit perfectly into our pre-vacation eating plan, offering maximum flavor without the heavy ingredients. In fact, this recipe is entirely free of those richer elements, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Furthermore, February is recognized as Heart Health Month, providing another compelling reason to prioritize nourishing, heart-friendly meals like these tacos. They’re proof that healthy eating doesn’t have to sacrifice taste or satisfaction.

We’ve gone the extra mile by using whole wheat, low-carb tortillas, amplifying the nutritional value without compromising on the taco experience. The ground chicken, seasoned to perfection with the rich flavor of Tuttorosso tomato sauce and a hint of chicken stock, serves as a wonderfully lean and versatile base. It’s a fantastic alternative to beef, providing a lighter profile that’s just as satisfying. But what truly elevates these tacos from simple to sensational are the vibrant toppings. My homemade Tzatziki sauce, with its cool, tangy notes of cucumber and dill, is a game-changer. Paired with crisp romaine, crumbled feta, fresh diced tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onion, every bite is an exciting blend of textures and Mediterranean-inspired flavors. This combination ensures that dinner is anything but boring.

The Tuttorosso Difference: Quality You Can Taste

My preference for Tuttorosso isn’t just sentimental; it’s rooted in quality. These tomatoes are sourced from family-owned and family-run farms, and proudly packed right here in the U.S. Over the years, I’ve noticed a significant difference in taste, freshness, and overall quality when comparing Tuttorosso to other brands of canned tomatoes and sauces. The vibrant color alone is often a clear indicator of their superiority. As passionate home cooks, I believe we all understand the importance of selecting premium ingredients to ensure our recipes achieve their best possible flavor. Using Tuttorosso means I can trust that the base of my sauces, whether Italian or, in this case, Greek-inspired, will always be exceptional. This commitment to quality shines through in every dish, making a noticeable difference in the final outcome. It’s this consistent excellence that empowers a simple ingredient to truly elevate a recipe, transforming it from good to absolutely unforgettable.

This recipe is designed for maximum flavor and minimal effort, proving that wholesome, delicious meals don’t need to be complicated. Whether you’re meal prepping for a busy week, seeking a healthy option, or simply craving something new and exciting, these Greek Chicken Soft Tacos are sure to become a cherished addition to your recipe rotation. I encourage you to experience the delightful fusion of flavors and the ease of preparation for yourself. Enjoy!

Easy Greek Chicken Soft Tacos combine the fresh, vibrant flavors of Greek cuisine with the beloved format of Mexican tacos, creating a tasty, healthy, and quick dinner in just 30 minutes!

Ingredients

  • Taco filling:
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2/3 cup tomato sauce (I recommend Tuttorosso)
  • 1/4 cup chicken stock
  • 1 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • For serving:
  • Flour tortillas (whole wheat, low carb preferred)
  • Tzatziki sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • Chopped romaine lettuce
  • Crumbled feta cheese
  • Diced Tuttorosso tomatoes (from canned diced, drained)
  • Peeled and diced cucumbers
  • Chopped red onion
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the chopped red onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until softened. Then, add the ground chicken, season with salt to taste, and continue cooking. Break up the chicken with a spoon and stir occasionally until it’s almost cooked through.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and continue cooking until the ground chicken is fully cooked and no longer pink.
  4. Add the tomato sauce, chicken stock, dried oregano, and dried thyme to the skillet. Season with a little more salt to taste, if needed.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has reduced and thickened slightly. This process will take approximately 6-8 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the fresh lemon juice.
  7. Serve the warm chicken filling over your preferred tortillas. Top generously with Tzatziki sauce, chopped romaine lettuce, crumbled feta cheese, diced Tuttorosso tomatoes, diced cucumbers, chopped red onion, and fresh cilantro.
