This area is an absolute gem, offering an abundance of activities and attractions that could easily fill an entire day, or even several. Whether you’re a foodie, a shopper, a history buff, or a night owl, Old Town Pasadena has something captivating in store.
The streets are lined with an impressive selection of restaurants, catering to every palate imaginable, from casual eateries to upscale dining establishments. Beyond the culinary scene, you’ll discover an eclectic mix of unique shops and boutiques, perfect for finding a special souvenir or indulging in some retail therapy. For entertainment, there are theaters showcasing the latest films, lively clubs offering vibrant nightlife, and cozy coffee and tea shops providing the perfect respite for a quiet moment. And, of course, no visit is complete without a stop at one of the delightful yogurt or ice cream parlors. For dinner, we chose Mi Piace, an Italian restaurant that had caught our eye several times as we explored Pasadena’s charming streets. Its inviting ambiance and visible popularity suggested it was a social “happening” place, and we were eager to experience its buzz. We were particularly drawn to its outdoor dining area, a feature we always appreciate when the weather is as pleasant as it was during our visit. The overall environment, the prime location within Old Town, and the lively vibe were all incredibly appealing. We were also impressed by the lovely presentation of the food, which elevated the dining experience. A pleasant surprise was how reasonably priced the menu was, especially considering the quality and atmosphere. While it may not have been an “over-the-top special” culinary revelation, Mi Piace proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable and fun place to dine, offering decent food at a great value.
To cap off our evening, we made a quick stop to snap a photo of the iconic Rose Bowl. This historic athletic stadium is more than just a venue; it’s a piece of American sporting legend. It serves as the proud home field for the UCLA Bruins football team and, most famously, hosts the annual college football bowl game, the Rose Bowl, held ceremoniously on New Year’s Day. Even for those not deeply entrenched in sports, the sheer scale and history of the Rose Bowl make it a pretty cool sight to behold, especially recognizing its significance in the world of college athletics.
A Fan’s Dream Come True: Visiting ‘The Office’ Studio in Van Nuys
After a restful night, we woke early, buzzing with excitement for the day’s adventures. Our very first stop of the day was arguably the highlight of my entire California trip: a pilgrimage to 13927 Saticoy Street in Van Nuys, the actual studio location where my absolute favorite TV show, “The Office,” was filmed! It felt surreal to be heading to such a beloved spot. The studio itself is tucked away on a rather sleepy and unassuming industrial street, precisely the kind of place you’d least expect to find the home of Dunder Mifflin. I have been utterly obsessed with “The Office” since its inception, so this visit was more than just a sightseeing stop; it was a truly emotional experience.
Just recalling the moment we arrived gives me goosebumps – the excitement was palpable! I’m undoubtedly an “Office nerd,” and this was a dream come true. The most incredible part was that my wonderful hubby had orchestrated it as a complete surprise; I had no idea we were even close to the filming location until we pulled up. It was a truly thoughtful gesture that made the experience even more special. Although the show had concluded by the time of our visit, meaning the usual props like the characters’ cars or the iconic Dunder Mifflin signs were no longer present, it did not diminish the thrill in the slightest. Our next destination was the glittering heart of the entertainment world: Hollywood! Naturally, a visit here necessitated a stop at the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. However, I must confess, this particular part of our trip was a bit of a disappointment for me. Perhaps it was the sheer volume of tourists jostling for space, or the constant barrage of street vendors handing out flyers, discount cards, directions to gift shops, and even unsolicited CDs. The overall frenetic buzz and commercialism were overwhelming, creating an environment that fell far short of my expectations.
I had envisioned something more lavish, more glamorous, and outstanding – a place that truly embodied the magic and grandeur of Hollywood. Instead, it felt somewhat chaotic and less polished than its legendary reputation suggests. It was genuinely challenging to enjoy the experience; trying to pause and read the names on the stars often meant inadvertently blocking someone’s path in the dense crowds. I can only imagine that this iconic area possessed a far greater sense of old-world glamour and sparkle back in its early days. While it’s certainly worth seeing once, just to say you’ve been there and experienced a piece of pop culture history, in my honest opinion, Los Angeles offers numerous other attractions that provide a far more enjoyable and authentic experience than the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Sorry, Hollywood, but there are better sights to behold!

Perched majestically on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood within Los Angeles’ expansive Griffith Park, this landmark offers a truly transcendent experience. The observatory itself houses numerous fascinating exhibits dedicated to astronomy and space exploration, making it an engaging destination for science enthusiasts of all ages. However, the true showstopper reveals itself once you step outside onto the terraces.
From this elevated vantage point, the views are nothing short of spectacular. A vast panorama of Los Angeles unfolds beneath you, stretching all the way to the ocean on a clear day. This is arguably one of the best spots to get a clearer, more iconic view of the famous Hollywood Sign, which stands proudly in the hills nearby. For photographers, the Griffith Observatory is an absolute paradise, offering endless opportunities to capture breathtaking cityscapes, stunning sunsets, and dramatic vistas. Inside, a state-of-the-art movie theater presents immersive shows that delve into the wonders of the cosmos, providing an educational and awe-inspiring experience for a small ticket fee. Our packed itinerary then took us to the epitome of luxury and glamour: Beverly Hills. Indeed, we managed to fit an incredible amount into just a couple of days! This district easily stands out as the most posh and opulent part of Los Angeles that we encountered on our trip. Even if you only have a few hours, a visit to Beverly Hills is absolutely worthwhile. It’s a fantastic area for simply walking around, soaking in the sophisticated atmosphere, and engaging in some prime people-watching – you never know who you might spot.
The heart of Beverly Hills glamour is undoubtedly Rodeo Drive, a world-renowned shopping street synonymous with high-end fashion and exclusive boutiques. Its storefronts are adorned with the most luxurious brands, catering primarily to the rich and famous, as well as discerning international clientele. Even if a shopping spree isn’t on your agenda, Rodeo Drive remains a delightful place for a leisurely stroll, offering an unparalleled window-shopping experience. It’s perfect for snapping some impressive photos of its elegant architecture and designer displays, or for enjoying a sophisticated lunch at one of its many upscale eateries. Directly opposite Rodeo Drive, you’ll find the iconic Beverly Hills sign, a popular spot where we observed countless visitors pausing to capture a memorable picture. Further afield, a drive through the tree-lined residential streets reveals some of the most magnificent mansions in the world, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of “the other half” and the architectural grandeur of celebrity homes.
Following our exploration of Beverly Hills, we headed to Marina del Rey, where we had the pleasure of meeting up with some friends. We spent a wonderful evening on their boat, enjoying good company and the serene waters until late into the night. Unfortunately, due to our relaxed pace and the notoriously challenging Los Angeles traffic, we arrived a bit too late to embark on the planned sunset sail – the sun had already dipped below the horizon. Despite missing the golden hour on the water, it was still a fantastic time, filled with laughter and memorable conversations, a perfect blend of social relaxation and coastal ambiance.
Malibu’s Coastal Wonders and Mountain Roads
For our final day in Los Angeles, we decided to embrace the natural beauty of the region and took a scenic route to Malibu Beach. This journey led us through the stunning Santa Monica Mountains, a drive that is not for the faint of heart, especially for those with a fear of heights! The roads wound dramatically through the mountains, characterized by exhilarating switchbacks and sharp hairpin turns that demanded full attention. Despite the thrilling twists and turns, the drive offered an abundance of spectacular mountain scenery and diverse terrain, making it an incredibly immersive experience into California’s rugged landscape. It was truly amazing, although I must admit, I felt completely carsick for a significant portion of the drive, which somewhat detracted from my ability to fully appreciate every moment of the winding ascent. Nevertheless, I made sure to pull over and capture a breathtaking picture once we emerged with a glorious view of the vast Pacific Ocean stretching out beyond the majestic mountains – a truly breathtaking sight that made the queasy moments worthwhile.
Upon arriving in Malibu, we settled down for a delightful and relaxing lunch. We chose a charming little sandwich and snack shop known as John’s Garden. This establishment is quite famous locally, reportedly a frequent haunt for numerous celebrities, though we didn’t spot any during our visit (that we recognized, at least!). The food was fresh and delicious, offering a perfect, unpretentious meal in a beautiful setting. After lunch, I took some time to photograph the pristine beaches of Malibu. I was continuously astonished by the sheer number of stunning natural wonders and picturesque locations that California generously offers. Each beach seemed more beautiful than the last, with golden sands meeting the sparkling blue Pacific under an endless sky.
Farewell Los Angeles: A Final Glimpse of Santa Monica
As our incredible time in Los Angeles drew to a close, we decided to make one final, poignant stop back in Santa Monica. We had a brief window for one more activity, and I specifically chose this location because our previous evening visit had been shrouded in a dense cloud and fog. I was eager to witness its renowned beauty under the glorious Californian sunlight, and it proved to be a magnificent choice. Seeing the pier and beach bathed in sunshine provided a perfect, picturesque conclusion to our Los Angeles adventure. The vibrant colors, the clear ocean, and the lively atmosphere were a stark and welcome contrast to the previous foggy visit, leaving us with truly beautiful final memories.
