We stayed at the fantastic Hyatt Regency, and from there, accessing most of our planned spots was a breeze, even during a chilly February visit. Just a short stroll from our hotel lay one of Chicago’s most recognizable and captivating attractions: Cloud Gate, affectionately known as “The Bean.” This monumental public sculpture, located in Millennium Park, is a stunning, highly polished stainless steel masterpiece. Its seamless, reflective surface offers incredible, distorted reflections of the city skyline, the sky, and passersby, making it an irresistible spot for unique photos. Created from numerous individual steel plates meticulously welded and polished over thousands of hours, its flawless mirror-like finish is truly a testament to artistic engineering. It’s an absolutely essential stop for any Chicago visitor, providing both an artistic marvel and fantastic photo opportunities.
Navy Pier: A Lakeside Escape with a View
A visit to the historic Navy Pier is an absolute must when in Chicago. Despite venturing out on a rather frigid, albeit sunny, winter day, the experience was thoroughly enjoyable. While winter offers a quieter atmosphere, the pier is always vibrant with activities. We couldn’t resist a ride on the iconic Centennial Wheel, a modern Ferris wheel that replaced the original. The views from the top were simply breathtaking, offering expansive panoramas of the pier itself, the stunning Chicago skyline, and the vast expanse of Lake Michigan. It was a memorable experience, and for a modest cost of $7 per person, the slow rotation allowed ample time to soak in every angle. A quick tip for first-timers: the wheel never fully stops, so be prepared to gracefully step on and off while it’s in gentle motion. No need to be paranoid like me; it’s easier than it sounds!

No discussion of Chicago’s food scene would be complete without diving into its legendary deep-dish pizza. Our first stop for this iconic dish was Lou Malnati’s, arguably Chicago’s most renowned deep-dish establishment. From the moment your server expertly cuts and serves that first hefty slice, you’re transported to a realm of pure culinary joy. It’s incredibly rich, satisfying, and filling – more akin to a savory pie than a typical pizza. Be prepared to feel utterly stuffed, perhaps even like your stomach might protest a little, but rest assured, every decadent bite is absolutely worth it.

Our trip to a new city wouldn’t be complete without indulging in Italian cuisine, and per the enthusiastic recommendations of fellow food bloggers, we made our way to RPM Italian restaurant. This establishment proved to be the absolute culinary highlight of our Chicago adventure! We savored their exquisite meatballs, rich lasagna, and the divine truffle oil garlic bread – each dish a testament to their exceptional quality and flavor. The interior of RPM Italian exudes a chic, modern elegance with sophisticated, darker lighting and comfortable seating, creating a wonderfully intimate dining atmosphere. While the menu isn’t overwhelmingly extensive, every option is meticulously crafted, ensuring a delightful choice for every palate. Our server was attentive and remarkably knowledgeable, enhancing our overall experience. The portions, while not the gargantuan “American-sized” servings, were still very generous, leaving us perfectly content by the end of our meal. I wholeheartedly recommend RPM Italian for an unforgettable dining experience.
Garrett Popcorn Shops: A Sweet Chicago Staple
While exploring Navy Pier, we sought out Garrett Popcorn Shops, a place highly recommended by a friend. The sweet, buttery aroma of caramel wafts from the store even before you step inside, instantly drawing you in. If you, like me, appreciate a delightful combination of sweet and nutty flavors, I highly recommend trying their almond, pecan, or cashew caramel crisp popcorn – or opt for the mixed version for the best of all worlds. They offer a variety of sizes, and you can even purchase popcorn in decorative tin cans, perfect for taking home a delicious souvenir. Be prepared for a queue, as this popular spot often attracts a crowd, but the line moves surprisingly fast. While it might feel like a splurge for popcorn, the freshness, rich taste, and addictive quality of Garrett Popcorn make it a worthwhile indulgence at least once during your visit.
Quartino Ristorante & Wine Bar: Casual Italian Charm
Our Italian food cravings continued, leading us to Quartino Ristorante & Wine Bar for another dinner. Overall, everything we ordered was delicious and well-executed. While it may not boast the absolute largest portions or the most gourmet Italian cuisine I’ve ever encountered, it offers a consistently solid experience with very reasonable prices. For those with a heartier appetite (or on a college student budget, like my past self!), the complimentary bread is always there to ensure you leave full. The meatballs, in particular, were a standout for me – so much so that I’d consider ordering a huge bowl of them on a return visit!
One aspect of our dining experience that I must mention is the feeling of being rushed. For me, dining out is a cherished ritual, especially on a special date with my husband and when trying a new restaurant. I felt our food arrived almost faster than it would at a fast-food establishment, which detracted from the enjoyment of a leisurely dinner. Perhaps it’s the Italian in me that appreciates a longer, more drawn-out meal. We had barely begun our appetizer when our main courses were brought out. This is one of my biggest pet peeves! It creates a hurried feeling, forcing you to rush through your starters, only to find your main meal has cooled by the time you get to it. However, if you’re in a hurry and need a quick, tasty meal, Quartino would actually be an excellent choice.
Eataly Chicago: An Italian Food Lover’s Dream
It would be a significant oversight to omit Eataly from any guide on where to eat and what to do in Chicago. This magnificent Italian marketplace and restaurant complex is, without exaggeration, one of the coolest places I have ever visited and truly every Italian food lover’s dream come true. Upon entering, the sheer scale and vibrant activity can be initially shocking and even a little overwhelming. However, as you begin to explore, you’ll find yourself mesmerized by the incredible array of authentic Italian products and culinary stations. On the first floor alone, you’ll discover a delightful Nutella bar (yes, a whole bar dedicated to Nutella!) and a bustling coffee bar, which, though I didn’t order from it, came highly recommended. I was particularly captivated by the extensive selection of artisanal cheeses and cured meats available, alongside fresh pasta, baked goods, and various themed restaurants. Eataly is perfect for leisurely browsing, grabbing a casual meal, or stocking up on gourmet Italian ingredients. Just be prepared to make some quick decisions if you’re prone to indecisiveness, as the options are vast! I managed to pick up several packages of authentic pasta to bring home, a delicious and relatively lightweight souvenir.
Avec Restaurant: Trendy Small Plates with Big Flavors
Our final culinary stop, Avec, came highly recommended by friends and boasted glowing Yelp reviews. The restaurant itself features a beautifully minimalist and modern design, creating a high-end yet unpretentious atmosphere. The consistent use of warm, beautiful wood throughout the space contributes to its trendy and inviting vibe. For those, like myself, who might experience a bit of social anxiety or shyness, I would suggest avoiding peak meal times. Avec features a communal table setting, meaning you’ll likely be seated with strangers. We strategically arrived around 9 p.m., which allowed us to enjoy a much quieter and less crowded experience. The slow-roasted pork shoulder was absolutely incredible and a dish my husband and I happily shared. Next in our lineup was the deluxe focaccia – a definite must-try! I was initially hesitant to order something as seemingly simple as focaccia for dinner, but I was so glad I did; it was exquisitely flavorful. While the prices here can be a bit steep for the portion sizes, the food’s undeniable deliciousness makes it a worthy indulgence.
Entertainment in the City
Beyond food and sightseeing, Chicago is also a vibrant hub for live entertainment. During our visit, we had the pleasure of catching “First Wives Club” during its previews. While that particular show has since moved on, eventually heading to Broadway, Chicago’s theater district consistently offers a fantastic array of plays, musicals, and performances.
