Mastering the Recipe: Tips for Success

Achieving perfectly thick, rich, and flavorful baked beans is simpler than you think with these expert tips:

  • The Canned Bean Shortcut: This recipe leverages the convenience of two cans of baked beans, jazzing them up to deliver that authentic homemade taste without the lengthy prep. Enjoy perfectly cooked beans every time, without the guesswork of cooking from dry.
  • Bacon Perfection: The key to irresistible bacon is crispiness. Ensure your bacon reaches your desired level of crispness while baking, as it won’t get any crispier once stirred into the beans. This ensures a delightful textural contrast in every bite.
  • Effortless Preparation: With only 10-15 minutes of hands-on time, this recipe is incredibly easy. Most of the cooking happens in the oven, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your meal or simply relax.
  • Slow Cooker Option: For ultimate convenience, these beefy baked beans can be made in a slow cooker. Prep Time: 10 mins

Cook Time: 2 hrs

Servings: 12

Ingredients

  • 4 (28 ounce) cans pork & beans
  • 1 pound ground beef, cooked and drained of grease
  • 1/2 yellow or white onion, diced
  • 1/2 green or red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, divided
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 6-8 slices bacon
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Parsley or green onion for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine your cooked and drained ground beef, all 4 cans of beans, diced onion, diced bell pepper, 1 cup of brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and set aside.
  3. Lay out your bacon slices evenly on a parchment-lined sheet pan.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the remaining ½ cup of brown sugar with ½ teaspoon of black pepper. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the bacon.
  5. Bake the bacon until it is fully cooked and just starting to get crispy. Be careful not to overcook.
  6. Remove the bacon from the oven and set aside.
  7. Transfer the prepared baked bean mixture into a large oven-proof skillet or a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  8. Top the baked beans with the cooked, peppered brown sugar bacon slices.
  9. Bake for up to 2 hours. The baking time can be adjusted based on your preferred consistency. For thicker, stickier beans, bake for 2 hours or more. If you prefer thinner beans with more liquid, 1 ½ hours might be sufficient.
  10. Remove from oven and serve hot! Garnish with fresh parsley or green onions if desired.
  11. For the Slow Cooker: Simply pour the combined bean mixture into your slow cooker. Cook on low for 3-4 hours or on high for 2-3 hours. Add the cooked bacon on top during the last 30 minutes of cooking or just before serving. Enjoy!

  • For a touch of heat, consider adding diced jalapeños or a pinch of chipotle powder to these delicious beans.
  • Feel free to use red bell pepper instead of green for a slightly sweeter flavor and vibrant color.
  • Canned green chiles are another fantastic addition for an extra layer of mild spice and flavor.
  • A little minced garlic stirred into the mixture will enhance the savory notes beautifully.
